Alchemy on Etsy
Etsy is a fairly new and innovative site that has a number of unusual features. One of the most intriguing features is Alchemy. In Alchemy, users can post an item they are look to have made for them. People will read these posts and then place bids on the item in question. If your bid is accepted, it means you have a contract to make the item requested. Etsy sellers pay 3.5% of the bid price to Etsy to keep the lights on, but unlike the regular seller listings, there is no $.20 listing fee. Once a bid is accepted, there are a few differences between the standard listings and the Alchemy agreements. Alchemy allows the artist to set the terms of payment and when the piece will be finished. If the buyer agrees to this, they have a deal but when the item is completed, it’s not as easy as the standard method of shopping on Etsy. Artists/sellers need to send an invoice to the buyer and if using paypal, this can be pretty easy, especially if you have the buyers email as used with paypal. The invoice has a link to pay and then the seller is notified that payment has been received via email. You can send an “invoice” in two ways. One is to “request money”, which to me is not so professional, or you can go into “merchant services” and send an email invoice. The email invoice is far more professional to me, even if it’s just the wording. Remembering to follow through on the agreement according to the terms of the contract is important and artists must learn to ask for thorough information up front so that both parties are on the same page. Following up with payment, prompt shipping and leaving feedback keeps the Etsy machine running and everyone goes home happy. It’s a great tool for artists but it does take a little time to learn the ins and outs.
